Hello There

Another week, another Friday. Another Friday, another IYB Newsletter. Weather the storm and snuggle up with some cozy distractions.

Song of the Week
I’m Still Standing by Elton John. A song of triumph, resilience, and joy. A song for a Friday. Real name Reginald Kenneth Dwight, Sir Elton John provides his trademark rip-roaring vocals over a hectic piano. Here’s to standing. Not outside today though.

Film of the Week
Jackass Forever (2022). I hope you will join me in boycotting the Academy Awards this year after their snobbish snubbing of an untraditional classic. After a long week I had a choice between seeing Belfast or Jackass Forever. I went with the less challenging film and got exactly what I wanted. It was a relief to see such complete nincompoopery in the age of deep and dense media. A man gets hit in the groin. Thats all there needs to be to it. Homer Simpson was right.

Quote of the Week
“If they can get you asking the wrong questions, they don’t have to worry about answers” — Thomas Pynchon

Fact of the Week
Eng and Chang were born conjoined twins in Thailand (then Siam)1811. Whisked away by entrepreneurial Americans they toured the states as indentured slaves until they were 21 and free to make their own buck. They adopted the surname Bunker and made a fortune, touring as ‘The Siamese Twins’, a term that survived.

They married sisters and fathered 18 children between them, taking turns as to who’s house they would live in. There, that person would be ‘in charge’ and the other would have to be quiet and compliant. There is an annual Bunker reunion annually now with over 1,500 descendants attending.

Internet of the Week
Shakira sees her first cameraphone while in Japan

Mark’s Thing of the Week
A short story you might like — The Lady in Waiting

Word of the Week
Desenrascanço (Portuguese) — ‘finding an unusual or unexpected solution to a problem’
Privatising the moon serves a welcome desenrascanço to inequality on terra firma”

This Day In Time
1885 — Mark Twain publishes the “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn”
1930 — US astronomer Clyde Tombaugh discovers Pluto
1965 — André Romelle Young is born. Happy Birthday Dr. Dre
2003 — Bono is nominated for the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize

Question of the Week — Best answer wins a drink of their choice

What company would you most like to see privatise the moon?

Clock off early for the week. Why not? You deserve it. A little treat. For being good. You’re so very good.

Be Peace
